André Smith

André Smith has joined the Multifamily Legal team as Associate General Counsel supporting the LIHTC Equity business team. Prior to joining Fannie Mae, he served as Assistant General Counsel for Chicago Public Schools, where he advised on complex transactions, contract negotiations, and compliance matters. He brings extensive experience from leading law firms, including Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner, McDermott Will & Emery, and Mayer Brown, where he focused on tax, corporate, and energy tax-related transactions. André has represented clients in mergers and acquisitions, financings, renewable energy projects, and nonprofit governance, providing strategic counsel on federal and state tax issues and structuring. He will be based in our Chicago office.

He earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law and a B.A. in Political Science and Spanish, cum laude, from Butler University. André is admitted to practice in Illinois and the District of Columbia and actively contributes to community initiatives as Board President of the Chicago Public Library Foundation Associate Board and a member of the Stories Matter Foundation Board.
